1. Your Camera
Love Your Camera, Know Your Camera
Like many other disciplines, photography starts with understanding. With good understanding we can take a closer step towards better photography. Many times the thing that put people off from learning to take better pictures is the camera itself. The truth is that the camera controls are not complicated at all, once we have proper understanding.
First thing’s first, lets identify different kind of cameras around us. We’re not going to confuse ourselves with too many models and types, instead we’ll focus on the more common families commonly found in different photography stores.
Different types of cameras (click on the image to enlarge):
Starting from the left-most photograph, is the more common point and shoot camera. These cameras offers simplicity and is aimed at general consumers. The catch with these kind of cameras is the minimal customization level.
The middle is what we can call the semi-digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex). These cameras offer both the portability of point and shoot camera and customization level of an SLR camera (we’ll talk a lot about SLR settings later on).
An SLR (Single Lens Reflex), as seen on the last photograph of the three kinds above, is commonly perceived as a more professional camera due to its high degree of customizability. The most prominent characteristics of an SLR is that we have to look at our object through the viewfinder and through from the lens, with the help of the mirror. This image (click to enlarge)
shows the internal of an slr without any lens attached, light gets reflected into the viewfinder which enables us to see our objects. This blog will focus more on SLR understanding and configurations since they are the basic knowledge.
